P3-Despachos
Despachos
In my work with clients, I often invite them into simple ceremonies that help them connect with the
unseen realm while holding a clear intention. One of the most beautiful of these comes from the
Quechua-speaking peoples of the Andes in Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. The word “despacho” means
“offering,” and these offerings are created with deep care and prayer.
A despacho can be made alone or with a community, and each one becomes a living prayer — a

way of calling in healing, balance, and harmony for a person, a situation, or a wider community.
Many also carry profound gratitude, acknowledging the blessings already present.
Once created, despachos are traditionally offered back to the natural world: released into a fire,
given to a flowing river or stream, or gently buried in the earth. Each method becomes a way of
handing our prayers to the forces that hold and transform them.

Articles Written by Virginia Felder:
Mirror of Madness Explores the yearning for revenge which paves the way for an addictive pattern
of malicious behavior. Dr. Felder uses stories from her own life and from her practice of
psychotherapy to identify the “malice fix” and addictive response to pain which brings about
momentary relief, yet, interferes with the possibility of genuine healing. The mirror of madness
occurs as a distressed individual succeeds in getting someone else to exhibit pain and fury,
reflecting these emotions back to the true source. The target person embodies the anguish, thereby
relieving the initiator of the burden. The path of intervention into this relational dynamic is
highlighted.
Teachings From The Creation Of The Squirrel Apacheta Apachetas, sacred cairns from the Peruvian
shamanic traditions, often mark ancient pilgrimages routes that are still walked today. They are
places of ceremonial healing and connection with the mountain spirits (apus), the Earth Mother
(Pachamama), and the natural world. Jenny Felder works with these shamanic traditions, but when
she set out to create her own apacheta she had a few lessons awaiting her from a small, agile, four-
legged teacher!
Metamorphosis-Death as a Passageway from Family Transformation This article appeared in the
winter 1991 issue of Voices, “Midwifing Death.” The story accounts family events in the life of the
author which unfolded around the diagnosis of her brother, Bill’s brain tumor, his illness and death.
After a lifetime of endeavoring to bring the family to together, Bill finally succeeded through his
death.

P5-Infidelity
Infidelity is one of the most common issues presented in therapy. It is also one of the deepest
wounds a relationship can sustain. One of the difficulties in working toward healing is that,
regardless of the motivation or circumstances of this breach of commitment, the partner is often
totally devastated.
There are many different conscious and unconscious factors that contribute to a situation in which
infidelity occurs. Not all couples addressing issues of infidelity are treated effectively by the same
approach. As a marriage and family therapist, I constantly observe my interventions in therapy and
seek to integrate ideas espoused by my colleagues. I find my experience with clients to be a great
teacher in addition to all of the techniques and theories found in textbooks and workshops. I am
convinced that there is no one right way that is effective for all. With identities altered to protect
privacy, the following are some examples of my experiences:
Early in my practice I had been working with Eric for about three months. Then, I attended a
workshop on marital therapy. Fortified with a weekend of wisdom from one whose ages of practice
imbued him with credibility and authority, I proceeded to encourage Eric to interrupt a process he
was experiencing. He had been juggling a marriage and a sexual relationship with his secretary for
the last two years of his fourteen-year marriage. Following the workshop blueprint, I suggested that
Eric either tell his wife about his lover or discontinue the affair. Eric, who had been very open and
vulnerable in therapy, came in for one more session in which he seriously considered the options I
posed to him. He never came back again. At the time I saw Eric as resistant to therapy; I don’t
anymore.
Paul came to see me shortly after he had been divorced. He had originally gone to a therapist
individually to deal with his affair. When Paul expressed ambivalence about ending the affair, the
counselor insisted that he tell his wife. Trusting that this would be helpful somehow, he followed
this guidance. His wife divorced him immediately. Paul is bitter and depressed over the loss of his
ten-year marriage and his three children. He didn’t want the divorce. His deepest anger was with
himself for trusting someone else’s judgment about his life rather than his own unfolding process
and sense of timing.
Other individuals get caught in a repetitive pattern. After ending an affair and brief work on ways to
improve the marriage, the individual terminates therapy only to come back later in the same
situation.
Juanita came in to see me after moving to Georgia about a year before. She had been married
twenty years, enjoyed being a wife and mother, but now was involved in her fourth affair. She came
asking me to tell her to end the affair. I told her I didn’t care if she continued the affair or not; it was
her life that was involved, not mine. For months she angrily struggled with me, insisting that since I
was a marriage and family therapist, and she was paying me, I should tell her what to do. I
suggested she ask the mailman or the butcher. I also offered to bring in my secretary, who was
excellent at telling people what they should do. Juanita stayed with it. She finally acknowledged her
own responsibility for this decision and, on her own, decided to end the affair. This was a new
beginning for her to explore life in a nondependent way rather than needing to find someone to tell
her how to run her life.
Elaine’s call for an initial appointment was very secretive. Her nervousness seeped through as she
Page
10
 of

Network Solutions Professional Services
scheduled under a fictitious name and left a phantom phone number. Elaine and her husband,
Douglas, were currently seeing another counselor. She had obediently told her husband that she
had been having an affair. Only…she said, “It only happened once,” and “I’m not seeing him
anymore.” From that point on she became swept up in a spiraling snowball of lies…with her
counselor, as with her husband, as with her lover. I had no investment in Elaine’s doing or telling
me anything in particular.
Elaine ended up divorcing her husband, severing ties with her lover, and spending a couple of years
getting more grounded within herself. She then settled into a much more satisfying relationship
with a man she lived with for six months and intended to marry.
Therapists are often driven by unconscious motivations. Some feel successful is they have been
able to “save the marriage.” Others feel heroic if they finally have been able to help someone “get
free from that bitch/bastard.” I have heard comments like, “they should have gotten divorced five
years ago,” or, “once a partner is involved in an affair, there is no way to work on the marriage
while it continues.”
We all carry with us our biases, our bigotry, our blindness. We all have our opinions, our values, our
judgments; so do neighbors, siblings, parents, children, friends, and bank tellers. None of us is so
wise as to have a monopoly on truth. Why would someone come to a therapist and pay a lot of
money for something they could get just for walking across the lawn? Confidentiality? Yes.
Experience? Yes. But the greatest gift a therapist can give is direction for people to listen to
themselves. It is this gift that allows people to move beyond their limits of past experience and
become more of the people they have the capacity to be.

P6-Religious abuse
Religious abuse
People seek religious affiliation for various reasons and in different ways. Often, they grow up in a
particular tradition. Some have no formal religious training. Occasionally, people attend religious
functions for purposes such as placating their partner or parent, making social contacts, or finding a
supportive community. Most often, however, people who participate in religious functions seek
direct or indirect connection with the Divine, the Source of creation.
Inherent in every religious tradition is some balance between direct spiritual experience and
teachings drawn from oral and written doctrine rooted in the history and experience of the
participant group. In extreme cases doctrine becomes dogma, rigid and concrete rules for behavior,
thoughts, and feelings. When organizations embrace a dogma that supercedes any and all direct
spiritual experience, religious abuse takes hold.
Many individuals experience confusion and pain as a result of religious abuse. Theologians have
identified classic situations associated with religious abuse. The following are danger signs:
Page
11
 of
19
Network Solutions Professional Services
Emphasis on the threat of discipline and excommunication (being excluded from the church family)
The group’s claim to have the only Truth of God creates fear of thinking outside the leader’s
teachings. Discipline may include public ridicule from the pulpit when a member openly disagrees
with the leadership.
Authoritarian leadership
Authoritarianism is evidenced when questioning teachings of a pastor is considered disobedient.
The result is unchecked power, which releases the pastor from accountability. Even in
congregations where there are other church leaders, authoritarian leadership may still occur if they
unquestioningly accept the pastor’s teachings.
Isolationism
Religious abuse often involves leaders pressuring members to avoid or distance themselves from
family and friends who are not involved in the group. Sometimes, parental and marital relationships
experience conflict because the religious group requires members to ignore and/or condemn the
opinions of others that are not in accord with the group’s teachings.
If you suspect that you or someone you care about might be in a religious group exhibiting some of
these characteristics, talk with someone outside the group whom you respect as a loving, wise
spiritual person, or talk with a professional who has experience dealing with religious abuse.

P7- The Enneagram
The Enneagram is an innovative method for discovering, confirming and verifying personality types.
This approach bypasses judgmentalism and offers possibilities for personal healing and relational
understanding. The Greek word ennea, meaning nine, and gram, meaning figure, form the word
Enneagram, which is symbolized by a nine-pointed figure within a circle. This geometric symbol
represents both the cosmos and the human psyche.
I use the Enneagram to help clients recognize patterns of inner thoughts and feelings. The
enneagram is different from other personality type indicators such as the Myers-Briggs inventory,
which deals with the outside world. The Enneagram reflects inner motivations. It is an inside-out
approach instead of an outside-in approach.
For instance, in a given situation, an ennea-type would typically ask, “What is the right thing?”
Different personality types ask different questions. A Two would ask, “What does (he, she, it)
need?” A Three: “What are the expectations I need to meet to be successful?” A Four: “What is
missing here?” A Five: “What can I observe and learn?” A Six: “What could go wrong?” A Seven:
“How shall I enjoy this?” An Eight: How can I take control? (Or at least be sure no one controls me!)
A Nine: “How can we all get along peacefully?” Knowing your type can raise awareness so that you
can more quickly recognize and alter patterns.

P9-Spiritual Direction and Psychotherapy
Spiritual direction is a practice similar to psychotherapy. In fact, the Greek word psyche means
soul. So, the word psychotherapy implies soul healing, which is one term for indentifying the
purpose of spiritual direction. There is also a difference between the two disciplines. The focus of
spiritual direction is the inner spiritual connection, in other words, the relationship between the
individual and the Divine. Psychotherapy, on the other hand, focuses on the relationship between
the therapist and client as the source of healing and growth.
A spiritual director normally prays with and for a directee. The practice of direction attends to
spiritual communion not only through traditional disciplines such as prayer and meditation, but also
through art, dream work, body movement (dance, prayer walking), song, mantras, drumming,
connections with nature, sensual conditioning, and many other means. Actually, almost any activity
can be a spiritual exercise when experienced with spiritual awareness and intent.
Psychotherapy is similar to spiritual direction, but rather than focusing on direct spiritual
communication, therapists draw on their own deep resources of wisdom in relating to the client.
They recognize the sanctity of every human life and seek to become connected to the client in a
way that the power of this truth is experienced. The goal is ultimately the same as spiritual
direction: soul healing and growth. If a client fails to establish a connection with the Source within,
then he or she will be left dependent on the therapists or others who can never be adequate in
communicating who one is or what one is called to in a specific situation. Successful therapy always
involves a client connecting with and trusting his or her own deep knowing.
However, the “psychotherapy” which managed care insurance companies are willing to reimburse
is not really psychotherapy, but counseling. Counseling has to do with giving counsel or advice.
Managed care companies are focused primarily on symptom management and can actually be a
hindrance to therapy. For example, a man recently came in for therapy with complaints of
insomnia, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and intrusive thoughts when driving of wanting to
smash into a bridge. If we focused solely on the symptoms, he would be referred to a psychiatrist
for medication and probably be able to reduce the symptoms. However, this would be ignoring the
function of symptoms, which is to say: “There is something wrong; you need to change the way you
live your life.” It is a message from one’s soul. When we do not listen to the messages from our
souls, the result is that other, more serious symptoms occur. Psychotherapy and spiritual direction
both use symptoms as helpful tools pointing in the direction of healing and wholeness.

Her nervousness seeped through as she
Page
10
 of
19

Her nervousness seeped through as she
Page
10
 of
19

Many behaviors tolerated in the home are remnants of a very dangerous thought: What goes on
behind these doors stays behind these doors!
Below is a checklist of violent and controlling behaviors developed by Men Stopping Violence, a

Her nervousness seeped through as she
Page

scheduled under a fictitious name and left a phantom phone number.

Her nervousness seeped through as she
Page
10
 of

scheduled under a fictitious name and left a phantom phone number.

Her nervousness seeped through as she
Page
10
 of

scheduled under a fictitious name and left a phantom phone number.

Color Rationale

These colors create a calm, welcoming feeling that encourages trust. The deep green suggests growth and healing, the gentle gold-brown adds warmth and a grounded sense of tradition, and the soft light green keeps things peaceful and easy on the eye. This mix works well for people seeking comfort and wisdom, which is important for a practice that combines therapy and spiritual guidance.

Typography Style

Merriweather Heading Style

Primary headings with Merriweather font

Clean, elegant Open Sans typography for exceptional readability and modern aesthetic.

Body text: Open Sans

Typography Rationale

Merriweather is used for headings because it’s classic, easy to read, and feels reassuring, fitting Dr. Felder’s depth of experience. Open Sans is used for the main text since it is very clear and friendly, making information easy for all visitors to follow. Both fonts are professional and accessible, helping people feel safe and welcome.

Imagery & Aesthetic Direction
Imagery Style

Use warm and natural photos that show peaceful nature scenes, sunlight through trees, open hands, and comfortable home-like spaces. Include images that reflect Georgia’s landscape and a diverse range of adults and couples. Avoid sterile office photos; instead, use images that feel personal and comforting.

Overall Aesthetic

The website should look peaceful, inviting, and professional. The mix of soft colors and gentle fonts should help visitors feel at ease and understood. The style is neither too formal nor too casual, making it approachable for people from all walks of life.

Theme Style
Rooted and natural. Designs should use simple lines and plenty of space, with occasional touches of leaf or branch graphics to tie in the idea of ‘roots and branches’. The look and feel should be inspired by nature and sincere human connection, balancing modern simplicity with hints of traditional wisdom.

Sophisticated and professional aesthetic

Layout Approach
Keep the pages clean, simple, and easy to navigate, so visitors can quickly find services and contact details. Highlight the most important services up front, with visible buttons for booking, and use a large, friendly photo banner on the homepage. Content should be broken into short, clear paragraphs with room for gentle images alongside text.

Mobile-first, adaptive design

Recommended Elements
Soft earth tones and natural greens, inspired by Georgia’s forests and landscapes.
Images that look friendly for both individuals and couples.
Language and pictures that honor both traditional and spiritual healing.
Elements to Avoid
Bright neon colors or harsh contrasts.
Stock photos with only urban or clinical office settings.
Fonts that are hard to read or overly decorative.
